Why Kim Schlam
What drives the work, what she stands for, and how she got here.
Prosthodontist. Spear Education Resident Faculty. Straumann speaker. Lifelong learner and teacher. Mountain-town local. Mother of two. Abstract painter. Bend, Oregon, by way of New York, Boston, Chapel Hill, and Seattle.
Dr. Kimberly Schlam earned her BS in Chemistry at Hobart & William Smith Colleges, her DMD at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine, and her Certificate of Prosthodontics with a Master's in Oral Biology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She spent the early years of her career as a U.S. Army prosthodontist, rehabilitating complex cases for soldiers before transitioning to private practice.
She chose Bend, Oregon deliberately — for the trails, the mountains, and the way life outside the operatory shapes the work inside it. When she isn't practicing, she's camping with her family, snowboarding at Mt. Bachelor, mountain biking Phil's Trail, or training outdoors with friends. The Cascades are her second office.
In Bend she founded her practice around patient-centered, interdisciplinary care and digital workflow integration — and she gets to do it alongside her husband, an Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon. Together they change smiles for a living, and there's nothing they love more than a case that lets them combine surgery and prosthodontics into something neither could deliver alone.
Learning is the through-line. Dr. Schlam teaches nationally and internationally as Resident Faculty at Spear Education, contributes to Straumann's ProTalk and Full-Arch Forum, and lectures on full-arch implant therapy, digital workflows, and the ethics of comprehensive care — and she's still, always, a student first. The moment the field stops evolving is the moment she'll stop showing up. That day isn't coming.
Outside the operatory, she paints — abstract work and sculptural design — and spends time with her husband and two young children in the Pacific Northwest. The art, the outdoors, and the dentistry share a common obsession: precision in service of human experience.
The why behind the practice — who she is, why prosthodontics, and why Bend became home.
What drives the work, what she stands for, and how she got here.
Not cosmetic dentistry. Structural, restorative, whole-mouth thinking — and why it matters.
Trails, mountains, and a life outside the operatory that makes the operatory better.
